AR, VR and mixed reality

AR

Definition: A technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world, thus providing a composite view.

It is an interactive experience of a real-world environment where the objects that reside in the real-world are ‘augmented’ by computer-generated perceptual information, sometimes across multiple sensory modalities, including visual, auditory, phatic, somatosensory, and olfactory.

As technology continues to rapidly evolve, it is likely that they are going to replace what we currently known as smart phones.

Facebook F8, Apple WWDC, and Google 1/0, have all been reported to be looking into using AR in their products. This is due to AR enabling more immersive and visual marketing campaigns. For instance, Facebook is looking to Facebook messenger for the 360-degree imagery, and to break boundaries of text and create a more personal and interactive experience between the consumer and the brand.

It is also being used by Toyota, so consumers can ‘see’ inside of their cars.

Also, it is being looked into for what the next toys for children is going to be.

VR

Definition: The computer-generated simulation of three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment, such as helmet with a screen inside or gloves fitted with sensors.

VR exposed therapy:

This is where a person enters a re-enactment of a traumatic event. It has also been used to treat anxiety, phobias, and depression. Virtual realities can provide a safe environment for patients to come into contact with things they fear, whilst remaining in a controlled and safe environment.

Military used VR:

The military in the UK and US have both adapted the use of VR in their training, as it allows them to use a huge range of simulations. They have used it for flight simulations, battlefield simulations, medic training, vehicle simulation and virtual boot camp, among other things.

Sport:

It is used as a training method in many sports and is used to help measure athletic performance and analyse technique.

Medical training:

Medical and dental students use it to practice surgeries and procedures.

Education:

Students are able to use VR to interact with each other within a 3D environment. Students can also take virtual fieldtrips, such as to different years, the solar system, or different countries, which they otherwise would not be able to visit.

Mixed reality

Mixed reality is referred to as a hybrid reality. As it is the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new environments and visualizations where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real time.
