General ideas for the room

Cupboards I absolutely hate the chipboard style cupboards that are currently in the area. So, I would want them to be changed. To incorporate tech into these, I had the idea that we could the doors for them be screens that shows a digital image of what is inside them. A drawback of this is if they are really messy, then it wouldn’t look good. However, I think this would be a good thing, as it would give people an incentive to keep them clean.  Screens Another idea that we thought of was that we wanted to include screens in the room. These would be sort of like the interactive white boards that you have in schools, but they would be retractable and go into the ceiling. This would keep the room still open plan, and for it to not get over crowded by technology when it’s not in use.  VR area For this area we would want it to be similar to what Kevin has in the makerspace, but instead of it being just tape there would be a different coloured floor panel. Wall ideas for the room

Walls  We wanted the area to stay open planned as that gives us more space to add things into the room. Also, it makes the room feel bigger than it is and not very crowded.  So, an idea that I had to keep the openness of the area, was to have retractable walls that can be used to separate the area into different sections and give some privacy to some lessons. Also, this keeps the open plan of the room as they can be put away.  One idea we had for these walls was to have them be giant screens that could have students work on rotation, so that we could see past examples without them being hung up like posters and they can change every couple second so that there is a variety of different styles.  Another idea we had for these walls would be to have them be mirrors, maybe ones that you can see out of, but people can’t see into. This would help to ensure that the room still feels open plan and big when the walls are up.

Chair ideas for the new room

Chairs For the chairs we would need two types one that will fold down with the foldable tables, and some that are going to be permanent fixtures. For the foldable chairs I thought we could have just quite simple as they need to be able to be compact. However, they do need to be quite comfortable as people will be spending a lot of time sat at them, so I thought we could have quite simple padded chairs.  Since the other type of chairs are going to be permanent fixtures they should be higher tech. I had the idea that they could be heated, so people can choose the temperature that they will be. Honestly it would be better if they didn’t fall apart like our current chairs.  An idea I had was to have some booths in or around the room, similarly to in media city, but these booths would have lower backs to the chairs as you can’t tell if they’re occupied or not. These booths would have a table that is also a screen that can be separated into multiple sections for eac...

Table ideas for the room

Tables I found lots of table types/styles that I liked, such as circular, hexagonal, or U shaped, as they allowed lots of people to sit together and encourages them to converse and collaborate.  However, we found out that this space would also need to house 50 Chinese students, as well as 60 (From each year) and these types of tables take up a lot of the space.  So, I had the idea of having some circular tables that are going to be permanent fixtures in the room, then some singular desks that can change height, so they can be standing desks, that are also permanent fixtures, and some tables and chairs that fold down so they can be stacked in a corner out of the way. These foldable tables would be the ones with a screen on them, sort of like a giant Wacom tablet, this would be instead of a desktop computer, which allows the desk to be usable for other things, while also having a computer of sorts so they can take notes if they did not bring their own laptop.  ...

Week 9 notes

Ideas The essay is writing about something that is to do with the topic and is valuable to the topic. Next week is a blog review  L . Mark is available for contact the last week of Easter. Submission is Friday the 10 th of May. So, we went to see the new space today, and took photos to see the space. 50 Chinese students that need a place to study in the area as well. UX journey is key. Look into IDEO. Look into historically peoples work spaces. Factory vs Design workplaces. Hierarchies in companies.  Mirrored walls. Retracted walls. Tablet tables, that fold away. Floor heaters, so there’s no above ground radiators. Examples shown, of past work as well as famous designers. Digital pin board. Have more sofas, higher up though. Booths but without a high back, so you can see when people are in them. The screens in booths are good, but with adaptors or airdrop. Pop-up chargers, with wireless charger at top. Key card scanning as registering. Screen tells you to stand up...

The Gym shark office

Image
I looked into the Gym Shark offices to see what a professional office looks like. Also, it is quite modern, so I thought that it would include lots of innovative ways for an office to be set up.  From the photos it looks like the office is very open and has lots of different areas that the people that work there can do some work. For instance, they have the break out space, which has multiple different chairs, sofas and tables. Or the relax zone, which has lots of bean bag chairs. They even have courtyards with extra seating for the workers to go into.  I really like how this office is set up, as it is very open. Also, it looks like a good area to work in a team as there is many areas with tables that have multiple seats, lots of sofas, and I find that when in uni I find it easiest to work in booths.  “They wanted a building that would accommodate their rapid growth and also be an attraction for new employees and business. Oktra’s design team collabora...

VR health concerns

Glen had the idea to get rid of school all together and instead have just a VR school, where you have the headset at home and use it instead of going to school. However, I wanted to look into the health concerns of using VR. Some side effects of using VR are: -Loss of special awareness -Dizziness and disorientation -Seizures -Nausea -Eye soreness One of the biggest concerns with VR is how close you are to a screen; however, the American Academy of Ophthalmology says there is no evidence that long exposure to screens can cause permanent damage. For each of the types of VR headsets I found that the age limit was 13 years old. This would not work to replace schools, since it would be needed for children below the ages of 13 as well.  According to the creators of the oculus rift you should take 10-15 minutes off every 30 minutes of use. This would also be bad for schools, as the students need to be able to do work or communicate with teachers longer than 30...

Good and bad UX

Good UX An example of good UX is the PayPal app. The app is known for using a simplistic design, this is good because it is really easy for their users to use and navigate.  4 steps to create good UX: 1.       Take action Think like a potential customer, such as what actions they would want to take on your website or app.  You should write these in order on sticky notes, like a sitemap style.  Each action should be completed in 5 steps though, such as 1. Homepage, 2. Click categories page, 3. Click product page, 4. Check out. 2.       Get emotional Next, use different coloured sticky notes to map out how you want people to feel in certain parts of your website or app.  For instance, when they’re on the homepage you want them to feel welcomed, excited and curious. Or when they complete a purchase, they should feel satisfied and happy.  UX can create this through a combinati...

AR, VR and mixed reality

AR Definition: A technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world, thus providing a composite view.  It is an interactive experience of a real-world environment where the objects that reside in the real-world are ‘augmented’ by computer-generated perceptual information, sometimes across multiple sensory modalities, including visual, auditory, phatic, somatosensory, and olfactory.  As technology continues to rapidly evolve, it is likely that they are going to replace what we currently known as smart phones.  Facebook F8, Apple WWDC, and Google 1/0, have all been reported to be looking into using AR in their products. This is due to AR enabling more immersive and visual marketing campaigns. For instance, Facebook is looking to Facebook messenger for the 360-degree imagery, and to break boundaries of text and create a more personal and interactive experience between the consumer and the brand.  It is also be...
